All About Me

Welcome to my page specifically dedicated to classroom ideas!

A little about me:
(This link will take you to a bio section on my other blog site- Happy reading!)

Classroom:
Almost every lesson I teach is hands-on and involves students working together. Sometimes it is working with partners, other times in cooperative learning groups, and then breaking up to work independently. Culture, diversity, sustainability, leadership, and responsibility are are built into my teaching style.
I strongly lean towards a student-centered classroom. Many of my activities require a teacher that has set rules (both individually and for group assignments), who isn't afraid to take on the fun of letting the children get messy/ dirty/ or arranging for "clean up" time, and who can incorporate more than just one subject matter into each and every lesson.

Random, Crazy, Silly Facts about me:
1) I own 3 Red foot tortoises. They are part of my family and I absolutely adore them!
2) I am allergic to cats, afraid to step on small pets, and therefore own 2 very large dogs :) China is a Boxer we rescued and Hogan is a French Mastiff/American Bulldog (Bandog) Both named after wrestlers
3) I probably spend the same amount of time volunteering in the community (with my family) as I do in the classroom.
4) I am of Italian decent (on both my mother and father's sides of the family), yet I speak Spanish fluently. I can understand Italian, to some extent. I have mastered basic phrases in German, but don't try to have a conversation with me in German! I have also taught myself some basic ASL, but I could use a course or two! I absolutely love foreign languages and listen to audio teaching manuals every chance I get to learn new phrases in other languages.
5) I dream of going to 3rd World Countries and teaching English to children/adults is now becoming more interested in musical theater, various styles of dancing, and wants to try her hand at gymnastics!
8)   At one point in my life, I was extremely overweight! I spent many years extremely obese and topped the scale at a whopping 270lbs! After a year of hard work, I lost 90lbs in one year. I continued dieting, exercising, and carefully examining my lifestyle and managed to lose another 30lbs! I have kept off the weight now for 8 years-- YAY me! I now love to exercise, eat healthy, and am more involved with sports. My family tries to enter numerous 5k walk/runs per year.
9) I am a conservation fanatic. I love making things out of recycled items, gardening, and teaching conservation tips and ideas to adults and children.
10) I never thought, in a million years, I would become a teacher. From as far back as I can remember, I loved the fields of psychology and law. My first career path was working for the Department of Corrections and worked as an officer for both Florida and Texas. After leaving the Department, I was given the opportunity to work with "at risk" students and absolutely fell in love. Now my love for psychology and law are weaved into my career choice. I tend to work with students with behavioral/emotional disorders. I plan on obtaining my masters but I haven't decided which field:
Masters-Special Education
Maters- Behavioral Specialist
Masters- Educational Law

Who knows--- I may pursue all of the above :)
